INTRODUCTION
For over half a century, the Theatre Institute has informed the Czech public about the events in the world of theatre, and consequently is one of the primary organizations to inform the world about Czech theatre. After 1989, the Theatre Institute became one of the largest publishers of theatre literature in the Czech Republic, and in 2000, the Theatre Institute opened the PROSPERO Bookshop, a unique book store offering its visitors the opportunity of purchasing a wide range of publications and periodicals published by Czech and foreign publishers.
The publication activities of the Theatre Institute include original and translated works in the field of dramatic arts, namely the series Czech Theatre Magazine, which publishes works about Czech theatre history, theory and critiques, the World Theatre series (Světové divadlo) and other prestigious publications, such as encyclopaedias and dictionaries. The Theatre Institute also works with other Czech publishing houses on larger projects, such as History of Theatre (Dějiny divadla), Dictionary of Theatre Anthropology (Slovník Divadelní antropologie), and Opera Lexicon (Operní lexicon). Furthermore, the Theatre Institute is conducting research into creating a database of Czech plays that have been translated into foreign languages. More information about the Czech publications is available on our Czech website: www.divadelni-ustav.cz/publikace.asp.
