Form of Collection

The Audio Library of the Theatre Institute contains a large inventory of sound recordings of spoken texts, operas, operettas, melodramas, musicals, scenic music and ballets.  The entire collection is catalogued in the automated library system and is accessible by using a separate on-line catalogue.

The collection contains recordings from the original music collections of the Theatre Institute, as well as newly acquired and donated acquisitions.

a) The early collection contains vinyl albums of spoken texts, melodramas, operas, operettas and ballets, all in 16, 33, 45 and 78 RPM.

b) All newly acquired recordings are either cassettes or CDs. They are primarily related to Bohemian productions and programmes, including operas, operettas, musicals, scenic music, radio plays, actors´ profiles, and retrospectives. Part of the collection includes recordings of the operas recorded at the National Theatre in Prague and the State Opera Prague.

Digitalization and presentation

A large portion of our collection is currently being digitalised. This process warrants the availability of damaged vinyl recordings (ie. 78 RPM) and allows the collection to grow in an effectively safe way. The data is also provided on an independent server where it is possible to listen to the recordings in an MP3 format on a computer in the Reading Room.

The recordings are made available for study purposes only!!
It is not possible to make copies nor take the recordings out of the TI Reading Room!!

Reading Room Services

Services of the Audio Library are free for all registered users of the Theatre Institute. Those interested individuals who are not registered, can use the services of the Audio Library for a nominal fee (see price list). It is therefore to their advantage that they become registered users of all services of the Theatre Institute, which can be done during the regular working hours, at the Theatre Institute Library.

To get the most out of the Reading Room, it is best to reserve a space by calling: 224 809 149, email: Space in the Reading Room is limited. Users who have not previously reserved a space prior to coming to the Reading Room are not guaranteed this service.

A selected portion of the collections (only CDs) can be borrowed and taken outside the building of the Theatre Institute. These loans can be arranged during the opening hours of Library.
